Dashboard Builder
Dashboard Builder makes it easy to combine multiple Qrvey Composer components, like forms, charts and metrics, into beautiful web pages, each with their own unique sharable URL. You can also combine multiple dashboards into a complete information application by using navigation, which is discussed in another article.
To open Dashboard Builder, click the Dashboard Builder icon in the left navigation bar.
Canvas Layout
The top of the canvas is divided into three sections: the main menu, the toolbar, and the page status with publishing options.
The bottom of the canvas displays a tab for every dashboard you create. This is where you are able to rearrange the order of your dashboards, rename, delete or duplicate a dashboard, make it private, and find a unique URL for the specific dashboard you’re working on (as opposed to the overall application URL).
You can arrange every tab’s width by clicking on the resize button located to the left of the first tab. By clicking it, the width will change to fit the dashboard name and clicking it again will reset the tab to its default size.
Filters along with Data & Configuration panels are displayed on the right side. Once you have configured the datasets you will be working with, you can see them listed in the Data Panel.
When a Dataset has been created, it appears listed in the Data Panel. Expanding the dataset, shows all the charts and summary panels that have been created using that dataset. These can be dragged directly from the panel onto the canvas as some sort of a shortcut that saves you time adding already created charts to different dashboards.
Hovering over an item shows the name of the chart, chart type and the chart description if it has been provided by the creator.
You can click on the arrow icon next to the dataset name to get redirected to the Dataset Design page where you can apply changed to that Dataset. Read more about this in the Dataset article.
Toolbar
In the toolbar, you will find the options to configure your dashboard and options to add content.
You can choose the resolution that will fit your page viewers best. You can change this setting at any time keeping in mind that this affects the sizes of all pages, and when switching to a smaller resolution, some objects may be repositioned which is an action that cannot be reverted.
From the toolbar, you can also click on the chart icon to access the chart builder. Once you configure and save your chart, this will be added to your dashboard right away.
On your dashboard you can find dashboard objects options: image, text, and button. When selecting the icon, you can click and drag the size of the object on the canvas.
Once there are multiple objects added to a dashboard here, you have the option to arrange your objects by sending them to the front or back.
You can configure grid options such as showing the grid lines or the snap to grid option.
While designing your dashboards, you can see how your content will be displayed on different devices. In the toolbar, you will find the option to switch from desktop to tablet and mobile devices view. Configuration options are disabled in mobile views, you may only rearrange dashboard components to further define your tablet and mobile layouts.
Towards the right side of the toolbar, you will see the download button - you can use this to download the dashboard data in CSV format. If there are multiple datasets being used on the same dashboards, they will be exported as separate files.
Selecting Objects
Once you have added objects (charts, images, texts, or buttons) to the canvas, you can choose them by clicking on each of them to move them around, modify their properties or apply different configurations.
The canvas also supports the selection of multiple objects simultaneously creating a group to move them together or use other options for all the selected items. By pressing the Control/Command key and clicking on each object on the canvas multiple objects can be selected.
You can also keep pressing the control/command key while dragging a square with your mouse around the items you want to select.
Aligning Objects
Objects can be aligned automatically using the “Align Objects” toolbar option. Clicking on the button will display a list of options to align the objects.
Depending on how many items you have selected, the behavior of the aligned objects could vary slightly.
Align left: The object is aligned to the leftmost side of the canvas. When multiple objects are selected, they will be left-aligned based on the leftmost item of that group. Align center: The object is aligned to the center of the canvas. When multiple objects are selected, they will be aligned to the center of the selection area.
Align right: The object is aligned to the rightmost side of the canvas. When multiple objects are selected, they will be right-aligned based on the rightmost item of that group.
Align top: The object is aligned to the top of the canvas. When multiple objects are selected, they will be top-aligned based on the uppermost item.
Align middle: The object is aligned to the middle of the canvas. When multiple objects are selected, they will be aligned to the middle of the selection area.
Align bottom: The object is aligned to the bottom side of the canvas. When multiple objects are selected, they will be bottom-aligned based on the lowermost item of that group.
Data & Configuration
In order to begin creating charts and filters for your dashboards, you will need to have configured at least one dataset first. This can be done in the Data Section.
Once you have one or a group of datasets ready, they will be displayed in the Data panel on the right side of the canvas. Here, you can search for a particular dataset and expand each dataset to find the created charts or summary panels that can be added to a dashboard. To add a chart just click and hold the chart’s blue box to drag and drop onto the canvas. You can also opt for Shift + Click to add multiple charts at the same time.
If you have a long list of datasets, you can also select favorites by clicking on the blue star. It will turn orange to indicate the dataset is marked as favorite, and by clicking the orange button besides Data you will see only your favorite datasets.
If you need to access one of the datasets you are working with from Report Builder you can look for the Dataset shortcut beside the Dataset name, clicking on it will redirect you to the dataset’s data page in a quicker way.
Object Configuration
As you are building your dashboards, you will need to use the Data & Configuration panel where you can find the configuration settings for each object added to a dashboard.
For Text, Images and Buttons, you will find options to style fonts, colors, text alignment, image aspect, and an option to add a URL to create links from the objects.
For charts, you will find the Page Actions access point where you will be able to define chart actions like Filter By or Drill-Downs in a customized way for your page viewers.
To access the configuration options, you must click on the object you would like to work with. To switch back and view your datasets, you can click anywhere on the canvas.
To reposition each object, you can click anywhere on the object and drag it to the desired position. You can also click on any of the nodes around the object to resize, and the “X” in the right corner to remove it from the dashboard.
Image
Insert an image that redirects your End Users to a target page of your choice. Supported formats of images are:
- .jpeg
- .png
- .gif
Upload an image you want to insert into your dashboard or paste the image URL if it’s already online.
Set the Aspect keeping in mind that the image in Contain mode resizes to fully fit in the container; in Cover mode, it keeps its size and aspect ratio as is; in Fill mode, it resizes the image and changes its proportions, to fill the container. For example, you can either choose to resize an image with a custom resolution or choose to reduce the size but keep a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Button
You can add buttons for your End Users to interact with, redirecting them to another site when clicked on.
Enter the text caption visible to users in the Label box, and then choose the color of the text and button background.
In the Add Link box, paste the URL you want the button to redirect to.
#### Text Box For Text, you can change the font type, size and color, choose between different text styles, change the background color, and align the text or create paragraphs. Text can be added by typing it in or using the shortcuts for copy/paste/cut.
You can add a link to the text by highligthing a part of the whole text and clicking the Add Link icon or you can simply place the cursor in an empty spot of the the text box to add a raw hyperlink. If you want to remove the link, click the Remove Link icon.
You can choose your text or a part of it to appear subscript or superscript.
By clicking on the eraser icon, you can remove all the formatting applied to your text. If you want your text to appear within a frame enable the border that is by default turned off. Here you can also choose the color of your border and its width.
You can also customize text padding - left, right, top, and bottom.
Filters
The Filters menu item lets you easily manage global, page, and tab filters defined in your dashboard, as well as all the filters defined in your panels. When you select the Filters menu item, you will see the list of filters defined. The filters are grouped under the headings Global Filters, Tab Filters, and Panel Filters. Panel filters are grouped by panel name.
To enable or disable all filters for a group, click on the toggle button or check-box next to the group name. To enable or disable an individual filter value, use the check-box next to it.
To create a new global filter, click the Add Filter button and the filter modal appears, select the column in the list, the condition, and values to refine the data. Finally, select the scope of the filter, i.e. All pages or Current Tab. See the Filtering Data page for further details.
Filter Panel
The filter panel has the same functionality as the filter described in the section above, but from the end-user perspective. Adding it to a dashboard allows end-users to interact with all filters in the published application.
To add a filter panel to the dashboard, you just need to insert it from the Insert menu in the top-left corner of the Dashboard Builder. After adding it, you will see a little icon in the top-right corner of the canvas (see image below.)
Filter panel has a set of settings you can edit to personalize styles and behavior. To edit these settings, click on the filter panel icon, and the configuration panel will show them.
Icon: Change the color of the icon. By default, the icon color is white.
Button: Change the background color of the filter panel component. By default, the background color is dark blue.
Filter Panel Default View: Change how the end-user dashboard displays the filter panel whenever a user navigates to the page.
Closed: (Default) The filter panel will always be closed when an end-user navigates or reloads the page. They will be able to open or close it at any time.
Open: The filter panel will always be open when an end-user navigates or reloads the page. They will be able to close or open it at any time.
This setting applies only for desktop and table view. If end-users visit the page from their mobile device, the filter panel will ignore this setting.
Tabs
The tab strip lets you separate the content of a dashboard in different sections. When you add a tab strip, it by default creates a tab with the name “Untitled Tab” that you can modify by clicking on the text and type in a new one. If you want to add more tabs to the strip, you need to click on the plus (+) icon located on the left side of the strip.
When selecting a tab, the configuration panel shows the properties of the tab strip you can edit. First, you will find the “Tabs” section; these settings apply to the whole strip and tabs. Here you will be able to change the font, border, selector, and background color of every tab or the complete strip.
In the second section named “Tab Size,” you can change the tab width by changing the numbers of pixels you want. By default, the size is 150px. You can change the width of every tab individually by dragging their edges or keep the same size for all tabs by selecting the option “Apply Size to all Tabs.”
Page Header
You can add a page header to all your dashboards by clicking the Page Header item in the Insert menu. The header area gets added as a container on the page and other objects, such as images, buttons, and text can be placed inside of it. Selecting the page header component will open the configuration panel for it and allows you to customize its looks and behavior.
The following options are available to configure the page header. Keep in mind any changes made will apply to all pages.
Background: This option will let you change the background color of the page header.
Logo: This option will let you define a logo for your page header. You can add the logo by entering the URL to where the image is located, or by uploading an image using the Upload Logo link. Once a logo has been added, you can drag it to place it anywhere in the header area. You can also decide the aspect ratio of it within its container from the Aspect dropdown list.
Logos can be linked to any URL to redirect users to, when they are clicked, by adding the desired URL in the Add Link input box.
- Background Image: You can upload any image to be used as the background image of the header area from the Upload Background Image link. The aspect ratio of the background image can also be set from the Aspect dropdown list that appears once the image has been uploaded.
- Width: Choose between “Canvas” and “Screen” to decide if the header should go only on top of the page or across the entire width of the screen.
- Height: Height of the header can be set in pixels. The default height is 100 pixels and it can be as thin as 10 and as thick as 300 pixels.
You can place Images, Text labels and Buttons inside the page header container and configure those to create the header anyway you wish.
Enabling Subscription
Creators can enable authenticated end users to subscribe to a scheduled delivery of exported dashboards or specific charts. This feature can be enabled by choosing the Page Subscriptions option from the Insert menu. This action places a subscription icon on the lower right corner of the page. This is just an indicator that subscription has been enabled on the page. The feature can be removed by clicking the X above the icon.
Once subscription has been enabled, authenticated end users see the option in the action menu of the embedded Page View widget and get to subscribe or manage their subscriptions. To read about the end user side of subscriptions, see the Subscribing to Exports article.
Publishing an Application
In the blue navigation bar along the top, you’ll find a button to Publish Application and a link button to view your application in a new browser window or tab.
Note: Your application must be published in order to use the link button. Accessing the URL of an application/individual dashboard that is not published will display a message to users that the resource is currently unavailable.
Once a dashboard is published, its content is locked in place and cannot be changed unless the Edit button is clicked, or the application is unpublished. When you edit a dashboard, your changes can be discarded or republished. Your changes are auto-saved but are not reflected in the published application until the dashboard is republished.
